You have probably come onto this blog, as you have been told by your dentist or dental hygienist that you have gum disease.

Here is a video from Teeth4Life outlining what gum disease is, and how you can help yourself manage it at home.

We would advise that the best steps to control gum disease are:

  1. Stop smoking if you are smoking cigarettes. Consider vaping instead.
  2. Keep up regular appointments with BOTH THE DENTIST AND THE HYGIENIST to prevent further deterioration, and to allow regular monitoring of your oral health.
  3. Brush twice daily for 2 minutes each time, ideally with an electric rechargeable toothbrush.
  4. Use appropriate inter-dental brushes to clean the spaces between your teeth. Speak to the dental hygienist about this at your next visit.
  5. Consider other factors, such as diet, lifestyle, and level of diabetes control if you are diabetic, as all these factors can influence gum disease.
  6. STRESS- This is a big factor that can cause deterioration of gum disease. Try to practice mindfulness and learn to recognise your stress triggers.

Gum disease, if left untreated, can cause you to lose teeth. However, with good oral hygiene and regular dental and hygienist visits, it can be kept under control, allowing you a good chance of keeping your teeth for many years to come.
